- Is moissanite better than cubic zirconia?
- Can you tell the difference between diamond and cubic zirconia?
These are among the most asked questions about two diamond simulants, cubic zirconia and moissanite.
And rightly so, CZ and moissanite are popular engagement ring stones.
Like many diamond subsititutes, they share a similar look but a very different structure.
What is cubic zirconia?
Cubic zirconia is common stone as a diamond substitute.
As it is rarely found in nature, most CZ stones used in jewelry are lab created.
This brings the advantage of controlling the production environment and process from start to finish.
Thanks to this edge, producers are able to create stones with zero inclusions and reach a higher degree of clarity.
It is also possible to add other elements to the production and obtain colored stones.
What is moissanite?
Moissanite is not only a diamond alternative, but also it shares a similar journey leading to jewelry.
Moissanite deposits are not common.
However, scientists have discovered methods to produce moissanite in artificial environments.
This leads the way to produce practically flawless stones.
And again, as in CZ, it is possible to produce moissanites at the desired color.
As moissanite is very hard and has a superior level of clarity, it is widely used in electronics and optics.
|Density||5.5 to 5.9||3.21|
|Refractive index||2.15 to 2.18||2.65|
|Dispersion||0.058 to 0.066||0.104|
Moissanite is harder than cubic zirconia.
Hardness of stones are measured on the Mohs scale.
Moissanite has a 9.25 rating while CZ has hardness of 8.5 on the Mohs scale.
Thus, moissanite is harder and more resistant to scratches.
Of course, diamond trumps over moissanite and CZ in terms of hardness, with its 10 rating.
Cubic zirconia weights twice as much moissanite does.
CZ’s density is about 5.7, which doubles the density of moissanite.
So, for a similar carat of stone, the CZ one will weight 100% more than the moissanite.
Moissanite exhibits more fire than CZ.
Moissanite has a higher refractive index and dispersion than cubic zirconia.
This results in a superior, more beautiful rainbow like scene when hold to light.
This pattern is known as fire.
Moissanite tops even diamond with its sparkle performance.
1. Are Moissanite diamonds real?
Moissanite is not a diamond. It is a completely different stone.
It is real, serious substitiute for diamond, though!
2. Does Moissanite sparkle like a diamond?
Moissanite’s refractive index and dispersion are higher than even diamond’s.
This means it will sparkle more than diamond.
Moissanite is famous for its “fire,” the rainbow like color formation.
3. Does Moissanite scratch easily?
Moissanite is a very hard stone.
It has a 9.25 on the Mohs scale of hardness.
While diamond is even harder at 10 rating, moissanite is close behind.
